East Colchester Children's University Project

Students from schools across the Child First Cluster have participated in activities organised by through the ECCUP project.

Fit to Babysit Programme - Springlands Nursery

For many years, babysitting has been an ideal way for young people to earn some extra money.   As parents, we place an enormous responsibility on these young people leaving our children in their care.

With the support of the East Colchester Children’s University Partnership a group of 32 students have had the opportunity to participate recently in an innovative programme developed by Colchester Childcare Connection and offered at Springlands Nursery in Colchester.

The three week programme ran on a Saturday morning and offered students from Thomas Lord Audley School & Language College, Sir Charles Lucas Arts College, The Gilberd School & St Helena the opportunity to participate in a Babysitting Course designed to equip them with the some of the skills they need to look after young children.

What the students said:

“We learnt vital life saving skills and it was a laugh doing mouth-to-mouth on the dummies, but really important as well. We learnt how to change nappies and look after babies and young children. We were also given a babysitting checklist to use.

We all made some new friends from other schools and were reassured by the things we weren’t sure about. We were awarded certificates, learnt lots and generally had a great time! I’d recommend anyone to go for it.”

Next Steps:  Many of the students who attended could not have afforded to do so without the support of funding from ECCUP.  Feedback showed that they regularly looked after their siblings and did occasional babysitting for family friends....the new skills and understanding they have has made them more confident and competent when looking after younger children.

In September 2006 we shall look for further funding to support the ongoing development of this programme. If successful, funding will be targetted at students where the cost would prevent participation.

Comic Strip Competition
With funding from Awards for All we are running a Comic Strip Competition with our Child First partnership schools.  Some amazing artwork has been produced and judging recently took place of the entries from Old Heath Community Primary School and Langenhoe Primary School.  Year 10 students judged the entries and were bowled over with the quality of work produced.  The winners will be announced shortly and will work with Nick Turner to turn their drawings into a professional comic strip production.

Colchester Debating Society for Young People

In partnership with Essex Youth Service and idebate we shall be running a one day workshop and consultation in September with Year 9 students from Alderman Blaxill School, Thomas Lord Audley School & Language College and Sir Charles Lucas Arts College.

Students will have the opportunity to find out more about the role of debate in society, in the classroom and through their participation and feedback we hope to develop a longer term programme of activities in Colchester Schools.

Computer Clubs for Girls

ECCUP has registed as a partner organisation for Computer Clubs for Girls.

In our role as a partner organisation we have access to support from the central team at CC4G and also from e-skills UK.  In the Autumn term we will be organising a school staff briefing locally to give you the opportunity to find out more about the CC4G programme.
